A path through a dark pine forest opening onto golden light

Home/Manifest

A gathering that becomes a place.

The whole idea, written down once, so it can be held to.

Most of what we call spiritual today happens in rented rooms. A studio by the hour. A field for a weekend. A retreat centre that belongs to someone else, with someone else’s rules and someone else’s kitchen. The gathering ends, the vans leave, and the ground forgets us by Tuesday.

We want the opposite. We want ground that remembers.

Why land

A place is different from an event. An event has to be exciting; a place only has to be true. An event is judged by its line-up; a place is judged by whether you want to come back when nothing is happening. We are tired of building beautiful things that vanish on Sunday. We want to build one thing that stays, and grows, and belongs to the people who keep it.

Land is the only thing that makes that possible. Not owned in the sense of fenced and flipped, but held: cared for by people who intend to be there in thirty years, and who are planting trees they will not sit under.

What we mean by spiritual

The name is Spiritual Land and the word deserves a plain sentence. We mean the part of a person that knows it is more than a job, a feed and a to-do list. The part that stands somewhere at dusk and feels completely alive, connected, quiet inside. Most people have had that once. The land exists to make it more likely, and to give it somewhere to go afterwards.

We do not mean a religion. No doctrine. No guru. No one whose word is final. Every tradition is welcome to offer what it carries; none is allowed to impose it. The line we chose at the beginning still says it best: the sacred space for your true self. True self is the version of you that shows up when nothing is being performed. Sacred space is a place that protects that version long enough for you to recognise it.

An event has to be exciting. A place only has to be true.

Ten pillars, one ground

Ten things have to be true on the land, and each one covers a way the whole thing could go wrong. Community, because nobody holds this alone. Ecology, because the land comes first and gets the last word. Spirituality, without dogma. Ritual, the small acts repeated until they carry you. Ceremony, marked time and held space. Frequencies, sound you feel before you hear it. Music, from the first drum to the last song at the fire. Art, made here, from here, left here. Light: sun, fire, lantern, and the dark we will protect. And Families, because a place only lasts if people grow up in it and come back.

Take any one away and you get something we have all seen before. A festival that trashes a field. A retreat for adults who need a break from their families. A monastery. A campsite. Ten is not a round number we liked. It is the number of things we could not leave out.

Families are the point

Every gathering is built for adults, with the children in a corner with a face painter. We are building the place for the whole family: parents, children and grandparents on the same ground, at the same table. The test for every decision on the land is simple: could a family be here with everyone they brought? Could a five-year-old run through this barefoot, and could her grandmother follow at her own pace? If the answer is yes, the land is right for everyone. If the answer is no, we change the decision, not the family.

The children will have real work, real making, their own village at the centre, their own fire on some nights and their own circle, held by adults who are known, vetted, and never alone with a child who is not theirs. That is what lets the parents take part in a ceremony and the grandparents sit by the fire. It is the one place on the land where the rules come before the poetry.

The order of things

First the circle: the people who want this to exist and will carry a piece of it. Then the gatherings: a festival, retreats and ceremonies held by the circle, the first taste of the land before there is land, with their surplus set aside for the ground. Then the land: found, bought, held and kept.

There is no date on this page and there will be none anywhere on this site until there is ground under it. We have watched too many projects promise a year and then spend that year apologising. The order is what we promise. The speed depends on who joins.

What we will not do

  • We will not follow a guru or write a doctrine. Nobody’s word is final, including ours.
  • We will not pour concrete over a meadow. Everything built could be taken away again.
  • We will not light up the sky. The stars are the show, and the land will be dark enough to see them.
  • We will not take money that gives someone else a say over the land. No investor gets to sell it out from under the circle.
  • We will not promise a date. We will only promise the order.
  • We will not hide what we do with the money, the water, the waste or the safety of the children. All of it is written down and open.

The invitation

If any of this sounds like something you have been waiting for, you are already part of the circle. Say so. Leave your email, tell us which pillar is yours, tell us if you know land. We will write when there is something real to say, and one day the letter will have a place in it.
