Integration

The time and company after a ceremony or strong experience in which it is spoken, settled and carried into ordinary life.

Belongs to pillar 05: Ceremony

A ceremony is only half of itself. The other half is the next morning. Something opened; now it has to be brought back into a body that has to eat breakfast and, eventually, drive home. Integration is that work, and on the land it is not optional. Every ceremony is followed by a circle where it can be spoken, a walk where it can settle, a meal where you are just a person again.

Without it, people leave with something they do not know what to do with. The retreat world is full of people who had the biggest night of their lives and were on a plane twelve hours later. The land is built to refuse that: ceremonies are placed so that there is a full day after them, and someone whose job it is to hold that day.

Integration is also what makes the land more than a series of peaks. What is integrated becomes ordinary in the good sense: it becomes how you live.
